Chapter 6
The Value of Flow and the Value of Stock
The words flow and stock are mainly used in economics. Flow is the total income of a single year when accounts are closed, stock is the accumulated assets at that time.
Flow is a result based on a short time, and stock is a result based on a long time.
In Kahneman's theory of happiness, it can be said that flow is a selfish happiness based on one's own benefit or joy, and stock is an altruistic happiness shared with another person or with society.
Thinking this way, it might seem that flow and stock are opposing concepts, as it seems that wealth and happiness can be; however, in both cases the connection is there. If the company slumps for a single year, proceeds can not accumulate. If one individual is not happy, the family's sense of happiness is not nurtured.
Flow and stock are related to each other and form a cycle.
Chapter 7
Flow Design and Stock Design
Design was born from the idea of improving society. Design came about not for the benefit of an individual, or one company, but with altruistic motives. Then, with capitalism, Design changed and evolved, and now possesses the two powers of flow and stock.
There is the flow ability of making appealing products, putting them up for sale, and expanding the profit of a business, and the stock ability of changing the structure of society and realizing a sustained happiness value.
Most designers design for companies, as do I, and make a living from the flow ability. It is hard to predict profits from stock design, which accumulates value from a long-term viewpoint, making companies think twice about it.
Universal Design, which supports the lifestyle of various people, beginning with the elderly, and design for the development of natural energy, is gasping for air before company cost management.
Despite this, Design must advance.
Around us there are overwhelming problems including the aging society, energy, poverty, the wage gap, etc., that we must solve, and Design holds the DNA of fate for the improvement of society.
This will cause differentiation from other cities and affect the market.
We can surely create great cities with a cycle of flow and stock going around and around, connected to each other.
A little stock produces new flow, and from there, the next stock expands.
Happiness Design is in sight.
